Penguin Chat 2 (also referred to as Penguin Chat 2.0 or simply Penguin Chat) was a game first released on January 4, 2003, for beta testing, then released in full on February 4, 2003. It was Rsnail's second attempt at developing a multiplayer game[2]. It was preceded by Experimental Penguins and succeeded by Penguin Chat 3 and served as part of the basis for what would eventually become Club Penguin a few years later.

History[]

Information from the Experimenting with Penguins post from Rocketsnail's blog and the Penguin Chat page.

In 2001, following the closure of Experimental Penguins, Rsnail's first attempt at a virtual world, he tried to get back to work on Snow Blasters, his original idea for a multiplayer game. However, he became too busy with creating commissioned custom chat games for various companies. Eventually, he decided to make an upgraded version of Experimental Penguins instead.

Beta testing for Penguin Chat 2 began in January 2003. That month, several improvements and various features were introduced. The game launched in full in February 2003. Throughout the rest of the year, multiple small changes and optimizations were made. The game was created with Flash 5.[3]

Advancements[]

Many new features not present in Experimental Penguins were introduced to Penguin Chat 2. This included chat balloons to surround sent messages, throwing snowballs, and emoticons. Players and room objects now had depth sorting, so they would properly appear top of objects they were in front of and vice versa. Accounts were also introduced, so players could now log in and save their username. Penguin Chat 2 also featured an igloo, where both the song the song I've Been Delayed and the Penguin Band (although the members were unnamed at the time) first appeared.

Trivia[]

  • The penguin model for Penguin Chat 2 was created in Carrara.[4]
  • If a player did not sign into an account, they would appear as a guest. Their usernames would be "Guest" followed by a number, and appear green.
  • The waddling animation in Penguin Chat 2 was reused in Penguin Chat 3.
