Puffle Rescue was a game that was released on March 15, 2010. The objective of the game was rescuing puffles from dangerous situations, following the Cave Mine rockslide. This game was located in the Mine and featured three different modes, only one of which was available to Non-members.

Each mode featured three base maps which would cycle with minor variations, such as faster obstacles. The player would start by rescuing one puffle per level, before advancing to two from level 4, and then to three from level 7.

Modes[]

Ice Levels[]

The ice game mode was the only game mode available to non-members. In this mode, the player would have to navigate treacherous waters to rescue Blue Puffles. Dangers in this game mode included the moving ice platforms, cracks in the ice, sharks, and water buoys, all of which could cause the player to fall into the water and lose a life.

Cave Levels[]

In this game mode, the player had to navigate abandoned mines to rescue Pink Puffles. Dangers in this game mode included trapdoors, boiler pipes which would intermittently release bursts of steam, snowball cannons which would target and fire at the player, and moving mine carts which, unlike the ice flows, would travel at randomised speeds. On top of other dangers, the map was largely shrouded in darkness and the player's visibility would rapidly diminish until it was refreshed at a checkpoint.

Underwater Levels[]

In this game mode, the player had to rescue Black Puffles from underwater. This game mode was notably different from the other two as the player would only have a limited amount of time to travel between platforms before losing a life (shown visually by the player's size growing smaller). Another major difference is that some levels did not feature checkpoint squares with the black puffles, instead having the puffles instead drift around the map in air bubbles.

On the first level of this mode, the player could follow the Giant Squid to gain access to the Underwater room.

Creatures[]

Sharks[]

Sharks appeared in the ice levels. They first appear in level 2, and continue to reappear every three levels. They move along a set path in a loop, biting at ice tiles so that the player cannot walk on them. If the player is standing on an ice tile when a shark eats it, they fall into the water and lose a life. Ice tiles gradually regenerate, always several tiles behind the shark. The farther into the game the player progresses, the faster that sharks will move.

Bats[]

Bats appear in the cave levels. They first appear in level 6, and continue to reappear every three levels. The bats can be summoned by standing on the large orange circle with penguin footprints in the center. The bat then flies in and picks up the player, leaving them to steer the bat using the arrow keys. The player must steer the bat to another circle on the other side of the chasm to progress, where the bat will drop the player off. If a bat is steered into a wall, it drops the player into the chasm and one life is lost.

Shocktopus[]

Shocktopuses appear in the underwater levels. They first appear in level 2, and reappear on levels 4 and 5, 7 and 8, 10 and 11 etc. They each move along a set path, some back and forth, others in loops. If the player gets near one, the Shocktopus discharges a field of electricity that causes the player to lose one life if touched. The farther into the game the player progresses, the faster that Shocktopuses will move.

Giant Squid[]

The Giant Squid appears in level 1 of the underwater level. It swims upward, releasing bubbles that the player can use to follow it across a long path of deep water. It eventually swims to a small alcove, containing stairs, which allows the player to access the Underwater room for the first time. After the Moss Key Pin is obtained, the Giant Squid no longer appears.

Hidden Coin Bags[]

There are several bonus coin bags that can be found in the levels of Puffle Rescue:

Level Method
Ice level 7 Obtained upon breaking every crack in the level.
Ice level 8 Obtained upon pushing the key hanging from a yellow balloon into the lock near the end of the map.
Ice level 9 Obtained upon having all three hanging green bulbs simultaneously lit. This requires using the quick passages between buoys when returning to the starting tile.
Mines level 1 On a platform behind the starting platform by crossing a hidden bridge. Starting on the arrow, navigate 2 down, 3 left, 2 down, 3 right, then continue downwards.
Mines level 2 Under a steam vent to the right of the puffle checkpoint. Must be collected quickly.
Mines level 4 On a platform above the final platform by crossing a hidden bridge. Starting on the arrow, navigate 5 right, 6 up, then continue left.
Mines level 5 Under a steam vent near the end of the hanging bridge. Must be collected quickly.
Mines level 7 On a platform behind the starting platform, accessible by a hidden bridge. Starting on the arrow, navigate 10 down, 4 right, 3 down, 5 left, 2 down, 3 right, then continue downwards.
Mines level 8 Under a steam vent next to the final puffle checkpoint. Must be collected quickly.
Underwater level 7 Floating in a bubble off the right side of the map.
Underwater level 8 Floating in a bubble below the map. Use a fan to get above the map then follow the bubble arrows, popping them to gain extra air along the way.
Underwater level 9 Floating in a bubble above the map. Use a fan, then follow the bubble arrow to a large bubble above the map. Bounce on this bubble until the coin bag can be seen.

Trivia[]

Glitches[]

  • When you lost lives, your score appeared in this fashion: "Score: 01 Coins: 01", but your score was sometimes not shown like this when you found the secret entrance in the Black puffle level 1. This glitch was later fixed.
  • Once you exited the "Stamps earned" message box after the end of the game, you were teleported to the last igloo you had been in. This glitch was later fixed.
  • If you stood on a loose plank in the Pink Puffle stage and fell into it just before it closed, you would see your penguin fall through a closed plank. When you died, instead of your score being divided by ten, it would stay the same so if you had 10 points you would get 10 coins instead of 1.
  • If you continued up to any point in the game and then lost all your lives, your coins would be the same amount as your score.
  • When you finished the Blue Puffle level you got as much coins as the points you scored. This glitch was later fixed.
