Emoticons or emotes are faces and symbols that can show how penguins feel. They usually appear in speech bubbles accessed by clicking on the "Emote Menu" or by pressing "E", followed by various keys what are usually the first letter of the noun.

A similar feature, emojis, appear in Club Penguin Island.

Note: The "?" and "!" keys may be different in other language keyboards. (These shortcuts are for American and English keyboards.)
E.g. The ? button in Finland and Sweden is the ' key. In Hungary, the ? is the ü, and the ! is the 1 key. And in Turkey ? is ö (Note: J = Joke)

History[]

  • On March 2, 2006, the pizza emote and igloo emote were added, with the latter being labeled as "TOP SECRET".[1]
  • On October 12, 2007, the laughing emote was redesigned. According to Billybob, the old design looked very similar to an emoticon used by "another internet company", and the Club Penguin team was asked to change it.[2]
    • While the blog post this was announced on does not specify which company, Billybob replied to a comment on a different blog post, confirming the "other company" to be Yahoo.[3]
    • However, the old design still appears on page 207 of The Awesome Official Guide to Club Penguin, which was published years after the design was changed.
  • In late November 2007, the skull emote and heart emote were removed due to complaints from both kids and parents that the emotes were being misused.[4] On January 9, 2008, the heart emote was brought back due to popular demand.[5]
  • On December 8, 2007, the popcorn emote, cake emote, lightbulb emote, strawberry ice cream emote, chocolate ice cream emote, and confused emote were added.[4]

Glitches[]

  • Since the Merry Walrus Party started, using the "smiling" emoticon, either from the toolbar or using the E+2 shortcut, would result in a blank emoticon. This was fixed when the Star Wars Rebels Takeover started.
    • However, during the Star Wars Rebels Takeover, the "ET" emote did not produce a sound effect. After the party ended, the ET emote was fixed, but the smile emote did not work again.
    • The emoticon was fixed, once again, when the Puffle Party 2015 began.
  • As of July 2015, in the emoticon list, pressing the shamrock emoticon would trigger the flower emoticon, and vice versa. This was due to the fact that their trigger emote IDs had been swapped. This was later fixed.
  • The Square Pizza Emote from the Prehistoric Party 2014 was not removed (in favor of the regular Pizza Emote) until a week after the party ended.

Trivia[]

  • All of the emoticons (excluding party emoticons) were designed by Rsnail.
  • The 'quick keys' (pressing "e" and then a number or letter) were first added on September 23, 2005.[6]
  • If ten penguins used the smile emoticon in the same room, they would get the Happy Room stamp.
  • The Cookie emote, the Blue Music Notes emote, the Clapper emote, the Clock going backwards emote, and the Police Siren emote were animated emoticons.
  • The new look for emoticons was only used in art, starting with the Prehistoric Party 2013's login screen.
  • The foam finger emoticons from the Monsters University Takeover have 6 fingers.
  • The old laughing emoticon is hidden in the Membership page of Club Penguin.
  • During the Muppets World Tour, all the 'face' emotes had a round nose.
  • If players clicked the Puffle Digging icon during the cooldown time between tricks, the puffle would emote an Indifferent Face, a Poking Out Tongue Face or a Meh Face.
  • Ever since the Holiday Party 2012, each party had 3-6 special emoticons, sometimes appearing multiple times at different parties.
  • During the Music Jam 2014, three temporary emoticons: "Cute Face", "Fist Pump" and "Clapping" were able to be used. However, in August 2014, they were still present even after the Music Jam 2014 ended. When the Frozen Party started, they were removed.
  • According to the moderator Wolfyjumps, the "Toot" emote was originally intended to be the sound a penguin makes when it speaks, but players thought it sounded more like a toot.[7]

Emoticons with new design[]

These emoticons are redesigns of the original emoticons, and were used in some promotional material, often the #WaddleOn series. They were never implemented as useable emoticons in the game. Several emoticons were not remade in this artstyle. Names in "quotation marks" are official, from swf code.
